Pillow cases were originally used by the rich and were found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The difficulty and sophistacation of dyeing and sewing techniques led to the development of pillow cases as an art.
Finely decorated pillow cases were thought to have began in China and Persia until they were introduced in Europe during the Middle Ages.
The Industrial Revolution led to the mass production of decorated textiles resulting to the production of decorated pillow cases. Traditional Chinese pillows were often hard being made of stone, wood, metal or porcelain instead of fabric. Some of the ancient Egyptians slept on stone made pillows.
